The popularity
of calla lilies has increase dramatically. Their clean lines
and unusual appearance is not available in any other flower.
Calla lilies are grow from tubers almost exclusively in greenhouses.
They are produced in California, Holland, South America and
New Zealand.
The come in a variety of colors such as white, cream, yellow,
orange, mango, wine and purple.
Calla lilies are divided into two main categories, full size
and mini. Full size callas are further divided into fully
open and semi-open. Fully open calla lilies are seasonal and
only available in white, with a flower diameter of up to six
inches. Semi open calla lilies are available in white and
green with some being artificially dyed in pastel colors.
The semi open callas are approximately two inches in diameter.
Mini calla lilies are available in all of the colors listed
above and are one-half to three inches in diameter depending
upon the variety.
Mini calla lilies are not an inexpensive flower compared
to most others. For their size, they are more than twice as
expensive as a rose. In October, the recent demand for fall
colored callas have caused their price to double. Hopefully,
production increases will cause a decline in future prices. |
